Autistic Mental Processing
The human brain - your beautiful child's brain
The human brain is unbelievably powerful. A living computer that is so clever it can take electrical impulses from the retina of the eye and turn them into an image with a trillion pieces of information, such as the view out of your kitchen window.
It can take the vibrations of air from your surroundings, including the TV, and it can give an indication of where each different vibration of sound is coming from. We can hear a million different tonal elements as the TV broadcasts an orchestra in the Albert Hall.
Whether high or low on the autistic spectrum your child has an incredible brain.
Our job and your job is to help your child get better control of it. To do this we will need to have a usable simple model of how the brain works.
How the brain works
Scientist know little about how the brain works. They can tell which parts of the brain do certain tasks and what happens when they are physically injured. Scientists can measure changes in electrical activity as different tasks are done or experiences experienced. They cannot plant an idea in the brain with the tools they have.
But repeated frightening experiences, and sometimes one off experiences, can plant an idea in the brain that has detrimental results. A phobia is an example that can adversely dominate a person’s life. We can now use language and the model the autism thinking project is based on, and remove the phobia in just ten minutes.
This shows that when people use words in particular ways the brain can be affected and change can happen. People can lose phobias and even allergies, remove fears and gain confidence, become followers of cults or religions and on the negative side influence others with lies.
They can beautifully express life and love through stories, poetry and song.
When words enter the brain thinking, mental processing, takes place. To make personal changes mental processing activities have to take place. If you know what to say and how to say it, you will be able to help your child. The how is more important than the what.
Language is the key to thought and change
Noam Chomsky is “the father of modern linguistics”. He is a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He suggested that from birth there is an organ in the brain that is pre-programmed for language. He suggests this because very young children hearing “sat cat mat the on” gets no response but “the cat sat on the mat” will have the child looking around for the cat sitting on the mat.
Through studies of language and therapy there is a strong argument for different mental processing organs similar to Chomsk’s language organ. These organs that do the processing are to do with the storage of information including memories and to do with the ability to manipulate or change that information. They allow us to think in our uniquely human way.
Those studies showed that it is language that is the tool for changing how a person thinks. That makes language the only tool we know of for scientists to change human thinking without using drugs or surgical procedures.
The studies became a model for communication and change. This happened fifty years ago and the subjects of the study were three world renown therapists famous for getting lasting change with their clients. The study found that even though the therapists used very different methods and didn’t agree with each other’s methods, at the core level they were all using the same communication formats. These formats were tested and refined until the formats could be used by anyone with the same results as the therapists.
The big surprise was that everybody was using the formats in everyday life, but, just not as well as the three therapists. This means that you and I just have to update our own skills to get the results we want for your children
Can I use the formats for my child
Everybody uses language so everybody can use the formats. This means you and I can become the scientists, the change makers, in our own everyday worlds. But the autism spectrum is extremely wide so the results will be different at different levels. And, every child is unique, each parent is unique, so it will be inevitable that results will be different, and some will be similar. This process is a journey.
To get the best results you will need the best skills you can have. The more you practice the better those skills will be. The great news is that you can start learning straight away and the exercises to improve your skills are not difficult.
And you don’t have to be a university graduate to learn these skills. Some of my best students have been working for local UK social services on the lowest pay scales. Some of the examples detailed below came from this group.
What is possible
What would happen if you could improve your child’s behaviours by just 10% ? Firstly, that would probably surprise the life out of you if you are like most parents and have tried to just contain the situation for years.
Keep in mind we are talking about the most sophisticated creation in the universe – the human brain. And your child definitely has one. Even Noah born with only 2% of his brain had it grow to 80% by the age of three, and he grew to have the behaviour of a normal child. The doctors gave him no hope at birth. But his parents were committed and stimulated him in all the right ways.
Your journey can start now
Your next step. Read the examples of successes using the model, listed below. And start imagining the skill you could possibly develop over the coming weeks, and imagine the changes your child could be displaying in the next few months.
The examples show how mental processing can be influenced with amazing results. They show what is possible but each is unique to the individual, and your child is an individual and will need their own unique changes. Changes YOU can start learning the skills to make happen.
The three major elements for creating intellect
Intelligence is about information - intellect is the ability to manipulate ideas from many angles.
Sensory acuity
Every expert has superb sensory acuity in their field.
Artists see a range of shades, we see one colour.
A mechanic hears a worn bearing, we only hear noise.
A doctor recognises a Leukemia rash, we see a nettle sting.
When dealing with people seeing unconscious physiological responses gives as much or even more information than any words spoken.
A mechanic hears a worn bearing, we only hear noise.
A doctor recognises a Leukemia rash, we see a nettle sting.
Rapport
Crude rapport such as finding things in common is amateur psychology.
A person's unconscious is where all their beliefs and desires are living.
Using competent rapport ...
1. stops your own opinions getting in the way while you pay attention.
2. allows you to start processing thinking like they process thinking.
3. gets the friendly attention of their unconscious which opens up trusting communication.

Manipulation
Manipulation is the ability to move things around.
1. Skill with the Meta Model and the Milton Model
2. Shifting of all submodalities
3. Moving past and future memories
4. Ability to recognise Logical Levels
5. Ability to change physiology
